This jazz ballet for solo clarinet ("The Jazz Dance") is a newly composed work by New York City based clarinetist Rick Bogart. It is written for a solo dancer and solo clarinetist (stage left) and was inspired by Rick's love of dance, especially ballet. Rick plays the clarinet on this recording and his warm, full-bodied tone paints a vibrant picture to accompany the visuals inherent in a dance performance.

At approximately eight minutes long the work has time to span from sensitive to powerful, and showcases rhythmic and melodic material that truly makes this a ballet in the jazz spirit. Utilizing strict musical concepts rooted in the tradition of jazz music, as well as long cadenzas to give the dancer space to create, this new work is certainly a unique addition to the ballet repertoire. Rick maintains that live music is an essential accompaniment to dance. "The Jazz Dance" provides a vehicle that all dance companies can embrace.

(Rick studied composition with Dika Newlin and clarinet with Robert Strickler, Gervase de Peyer and Kalmen Opperman.)
