A Few Moments More is an unorthodox musical suite composed by a veteran jazz pianist to honor his father’s life and passing. The suite is a unique synthesis of jazz improvisation and classical composition, a son’s musical tribute through a shifting landscape of sonic vistas.
We also get to spend a few moments more with the spirit of Bill Evans, surely one of Irwin’s musical fathers. The simple romantic theme of “Evening Song” opens out into imaginative lyrical runs that never lose touch with the composition’s underlying harmonies. “Ballade,” a modal, meditative piece, features quicksilver shifts, from feathery trills to chordal blocks of sound. Irwin is a master of dynamics and each performance erupts outwards and later deepens and implodes; yet each piece proceeds seamlessly to the ear, an impressive effect of Irwin’s precise keyboard attack. The final track is the most composed (“Serioso”) and features three movements: first there is two minutes of muted chamber-style thematics; then, “Serioso” gets serious (so to speak) and Irwin alternates dense, interior chords with jazz vamping and upper-register commentary.  In the third movement, he returns to the theme with a new gravitas, slowly bringing the short sonic journey to a satisfying close.
Marc Irwin is a veteran jazz pianist, composer and teacher who has recorded three duo records (two with Crossings and one with Handmade Music) and two trio records (with Urban Energy). This is his first solo recording and it has brought out his more orchestral imagination. Irwin spent five years as keyboardist / sound designer for Harry Belafonte and a generation as a free-lance Broadway pianist. He earned his DMA in Music Composition from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University. He currently tours with the popular satirical group, the Capitol Steps, and works as a musical director, arranger, and teacher in the Washington DC area.
